Your Guide to Implementing High-Density Mobile Storage in Your Library

The most important features of a library for members are space, organization, and efficiency. Members want to be able to find a book quickly and efficiently. However, many storage solutions and shelving options nowadays require more space! That’s why libraries are moving towards optimized high-density mobile storage options. In this blog post, we will discuss the benefits of high-density mobile storage and how to implement it in your library for a better experience for your members.

Maximizing Space in Your Library

Libraries are enduring significant transitions in how they renovate their space. The days of classic libraries are vanishing, and bookcases are being pushed aside. The need for computer labs, collaboration centers, and media workshops is becoming much more prominent.

Because there is less space for books, high-density mobile storage is the new key ingredient to making the best of the space you have for book and shelving storage. High-density mobile systems allow you to utilize compact book storage in about half of the space that traditional storage units would occupy.

Benefits of High-Density Mobile Storage

There are many benefits to investing in high-density mobile storage for your library, including:

Space-Saving Storage

High-density mobile storage can store items on shelves that you can easily move to save 2x the floor space. Store virtually anything to make more room for people, equipment, computer labs, etc. Plus, high-density mobile storage can be a great solution whether your library is large or small.

Save Money

Your library needs more space…but that doesn’t mean you need to move and tack on additional construction costs, expansions, or building leases. Reduce costs with high-density mobile storage in the space you’re in.

Design Features

McMurray Stern offers many design options and features to best suit your library’s needs. We can implement mobile carriages, different shelving and cabinet options, powered or mechanical systems, custom designs, and more.

High-Density Mobile Storage Design Features

Store Anything

Regardless of the item size, weight, or shape, almost any type and variety of materials can

be stored using high-density mobile storage systems to increase organizational efficiency, workflow, and productivity. Rest assured that high-density mobile storage provides maximum protection and security for all of your stored items.

Better Efficiency

Another great benefit of high-density mobile storage is that it increases efficiency. Staff and members can quickly and easily access the items they need without having to search through piles of books or other materials. This makes it easier for everyone to find what they’re looking for and helps keep the library efficiently organized.

Versatility & Scalability

High-density mobile storage is extremely versatile and scalable. It can be used to store a variety of items, from books and magazines to DVDs and CDs. This makes it a great option for libraries of all sizes and types. High-density mobile storage also helps adapt readily as your storage needs change, a huge perk for everchanging libraries.

USC Creative Arts Library Case Study

USC Creative Arts McMurray Stern Case Study

The USC Creative Arts Library building contains over 1.5 million volumes within its 81,000-square-foot structure. With the need for new workstations and worktables and the high volume of books coming into the library, they needed a way to centralize storage for staff and students on campus. McMurray Stern was tasked with furnishing and installing one high-density mobile mechanical assist system with mechanical safety sweeps that would allow the library to free up space.

McMurray Stern used USC’s existing cantilever shelving on all the new mobile carriages and platforms, thus saving money and protecting their original investment in the shelving. McMurray Stern also designed a high-density mobile mechanical assist system, a cost-effective way to store a large number of books in a small amount of space, and a mechanical safety sweep that would ensure books were properly stored and accessible for years to come. McMurray Stern worked with the USC Library to provide all of the necessary data, plans, and structural engineering calculations that allowed a permit to be easily secured from the City of Los Angeles.

McMurray Stern increased the library’s storage density by over 2x, doubling its existing capacity within the same amount of space. The shelving has also made it easier for staff to retrieve materials more efficiently. As a result, the USC Creative Arts Library is now better able to meet the needs of its patrons and provide an excellent level of service.
